As sunshine returned to the Nϋrburgring the 35th ADAC 24-hour race has finally restarted at around 9.40am EST, after a lengthy delay.
Shortly before 4am (EST) this morning, race organisers were forced to red-flag the 24-hour race as heavy fog rendered driving conditions near impossible, with drivers throughout the paddock describing the conditions as ‘nightmare-ish’.
Wolfgang Schuhbauer, who was at the wheel of the number 8 Vantage N24 at the time of the race being stopped and continued his stint at the restart, said: “It was a nightmare out on the track – you could not see anything at all.”
Speaking of the delay, Schuhbauer added: “Although you want too, it is difficult to rest as you can’t relax while you are waiting to find out what will happen.”
The field was re-assembled according to the positions on the track at the time of the stoppage in the early hours of this morning.
Speaking shortly before the restart, Aston Martin’s Head of Product Communications & Motorsport David King said: “The aim for us is still to finish the race. Both cars now look in good shape so we look forward to getting started again.
“The delay came at a frustrating time as both cars were running well and making progress up the order after earlier stoppages, but in such dangerous conditions it was totally the right call by the race organisers.”
The Phoenix Racing/Aston Martin Austria DBRS9 is now 4th overall (2nd in class) with Aston Martin’s two Vantage N24s 4th (number 8) and 10th (number 9) in the SP8 class.
Speaking of the Herreman Racing Vantage N24, David King said: “I think the Herreman team are really enjoying themselves. They’re running a good steady race plan and they’ve gradually been gaining places.”
The Herreman Racing car – one of the first customer N24’s to race competitively – currently occupies 6th position, also in the SP8 class.
